Brian Quijada is a young playwright from Chicago, and the musical Somewhere Over the Border is based on his mother, Reina’s, story of coming to the US from El Salvador, leaving his older brother, Fernando, behind.

The Kearny Mesa-based company went all out with a hefty cast of 20 performers and lively, pumped-upchoreography by Xavier J. Bush. Omri Schein directs the actors through naughty, pun-filled dialogue, striking a balance between the sixties’ machismo/patriarchy and comedic relief.

I think there is absolutely nothing unoriginal about this project. Created by Tyler Tafolla, who did it all, book, lyrics, music, and is directing the piece, which in 2018, had a showcase of some of the songs written for the musical, and only one made it into the final version. Last year, there was a staged reading at the City Heights Performance Annex. But truly, it took Tafolla 10 years to bring “Dead Moose” to full production.

The 2025 San Diego theatre gave us unique experiences, world premieres, revivals, and crossed feelings. -I had a lot of feelings-. From touring productions to alternate spaces and a bunch of new musicals.

Jonathan Larson’s RENT—book, music, and lyrics have lived many lives since the 1990s. Watching it now, it hits differently. It’s one of those works that—even if it feels overproduced at times—still finds a way to offer something new

Great choreography and amazing performances in an eighties flare. Wishing the songs sounded more authentic.

I absolutely loved the juxtaposition of the hilarity and the business side of the faire. Something that is not typically explored/exposed to audiences but is often discussed in the performing arts world, especially now with all the budget cuts and increased costs.

Omri Schein directs the SDMT piece, and it is a solid production. The musical is long. It has always been long. Regardless, Schein and Richard Dueñez Morrison, in the musical direction, ensured it had a good rhythm, effective framing, and effective use of the stage.

Diversionary Theatre began their new season “manifesting”. Because, as the description states, this “Glam Rock Odyssey” lends an authentic experience in various ways.

I had never seen a production of Follies before. Still, this one is a showstopper in every sense. The company truly embraced a round experience, as this production definitely pushed the envelope.

For me, Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, considered rock operas or rock musicals, have an added je ne sais quoi that sets them apart. It might be because I grew up Catholic, learning about these stories.  Moonlight Theatre is closing its season with The Prince of Egypt, which I consider to be a part of this category, and a musical that is not often produced.

Their latest production, The Heart, brings a story set in San Diego about a 19-year-old surfer’s last 24 hours. Based on “Réparer les Vivants” (Mend the Living) by Maylis de Kerangal, a work that also inspired a film in 2016, the Playhouse musical added even more, with an electronic dance soundtrack with music and lyrics by Anne Eisendrath and Ian Eisendrath, who is also the music supervisor, with book and additional lyrics by Kait Kerrigan.
