JOB at Cygnet. Like the kids would say. I don’t consider myself a “rollercoaster girlie,” but this play had me feeling like I was in the Guardians of the Galaxy Drop Tower at California Adventure for the full 80 minutes. A two-hander with no intermission, it is not for the weak. Written by Max Wolf Friedlich and debuting just two years ago on Broadway, I always say how exciting it is to have new plays in San Diego after their stroll on the East Coast.

The cast’s vocals are solid, but Emma Busse’s voice is outstanding. The potency, the range, and the interpretation were strong and on point. I do think her blocking and pacing could be smoother. Casey Whyland as Stevie is hilarious, and it was wonderful to see how Stevie conveys the beauty of analog and raw sound. A pertinent reminder for these times.

Because my theatre journey began with Broadway touring shows over sixteen years ago (my dear God), when I have the chance to see a regional production of a musical, I usually give my two cents by diving into my journey with the piece and going from there. In the case of Dear Evan Hansen, I am ecstatic to report that I had never seen it, and Cygnet’s production was my first time 🙂.

I always say, dear reader, that here, things just do not start from zero, but from another zero, and I am happily sharing that the artistic director communicated in an exclusive to this media outlet that, due to a generous birthday donation, plus a California Arts Council grant, the show will go on, and the world premiere of December Fourth by Charles Peters will take place in Chula Vista at the Onstage we all know and love. How about that for Christmas miracles…

The mansion, located in Newport, Rhode Island, will host a group of creatives and performers for a magno concert. Charlotte (Melissa Fernandes) and Arthur (Danny Campbell) are a married couple and esteemed Broadway playwrights who adapted Oliver’s (Kenny Bordieri) soon-to-be-published novel into a play, aiming for it to be the next big hit.

San Diego Musical Theatre, in its third production of the season, pulled through; earlier this year, funding seemed uncertain, but Rock of Ages made it to the stage in time and did it!
