The World Premiere of “December Fourth” opens on November 13.

The Theatre world is wonderful and complex. It is also resilient. As several venues across the country have been going uphill to keep producing and telling their stories, Onstage Playhouse announced four months ago that its rent had risen considerably and its future was uncertain. A “To the Finish Line!” GoFundMe was set up so the curtains would not fall early. During Mensa’s opening night, Onstage’s artistic director, James P. Darvas, visibly upset, announced that Salomon Maya’s third play would be the last at the venue, and that they were looking for spaces to present their Christmas show to close the 43rd season.
I always say, dear reader, that here, things just do not start from zero, but from another zero, and I am happily sharing that the artistic director communicated in an exclusive to this media outlet that, due to a generous birthday donation, plus a California Arts Council grant, the show will go on, and the world premiere of December Fourth by Charles Peters will take place in Chula Vista at the Onstage we all know and love. How about that for Christmas miracles…
“The past year has felt like I have been dropped into a Muppet Special; the evil landlord is constantly threatening to toss us beautiful fuzzy animals out in the streets.” Shared Darvas. “I have started the grieving process 3 separate times; I’ve recorded videos announcing our closure, and each time something beautiful has happened and our backs have been saved. It’s been tiring, it’s been stressful, and ultimately it has been rewarding.”
Darvas also shared that Mensa has been the highest-grossing production since COVID. Still, Onstage Playhouse has raised $35,000, and they need $5,000 more to close the run of this premiere smoothly, which opens on November 13 and closes on December 7.
